In Barile, a land of Aglianico, a seventeenth-century snow pit excavated into volcanic tuff to a depth of 17 meters, is restored and transformed into the Barone Rotondo Winery. Conceived as a sequence of episodes and operating as a catalyst for the existing structure, the project aims to preserve the geomorphological characteristics of the found object. Through a practice of “spolia 2.0”, structural reinforcement systems are concealed, while materials from local building traditions—tuff, terracotta, and volcanic and limestone stones sourced from inert material recovery centers—are integrated. In parallel, minimal insertions reprogram the interiors: timber ribs, a counter, and suspended steel tables sliding on tracks reconfigure the tasting room at the first level; bottle racks, open steel grating floors, and steel display elements reference the snow pit’s original function, accompanying the aging of Aglianico in the caveau within the underground vault.
